The ring semi mount that I am considering buying comes with pink sapphires on the sides, .96 ct and .98 ct each, trilliant cut. The jeweler said that they are pink with red overtones. What does he mean by "overtones"?

Good day Princess.

Most gemstones will have two colors. Example: Emerald. Green, yes? but is it Colombian emerald with yellow or Zambian with blue. Ever see an amethyst with red? We see the Four Peaks Amethyst here in Phoenix. Great purple but you can really see the red when looked at closely.

Next time you are at a stop light check out the color. The major intersections in Phoenix usually have two lights one will be REDwith a yellow or RED with blue.
Same with the green light either GREEN with blue or GREEN with yellow. This really shows up at night time. This is because people see color differently.

When you look at the pink sapphire you will see mainly pink but upon closer examination you will see some red. Glad to hear the jeweler calling this a pink sapphire rather than ruby with pink body color!!!!

This should not detract from the beauty as long as the pink is vibrant.

Good luck with your purchase.

I would say Color is in the eye of the Beholder -

Pinks Come in a lot of tones and shades and some Rubies have Considerable Pink Overtones making them look almost like a Pink sapphire - But they are not -

Pinks Should Look Pink -Hot Pink ,Baby Pink ,Soft Pink ,Bubbble gum pink -If they have Red tones that are visble to you as a consumer i would say they are Pink Rubies -
