Can I as a consumer send a diamond to GIA or does my jeweler have to send it?

How much is a GIA report on a diamond?

Yes, a consumer can send a diamond or any gemstone to GIA for a report. The cost for a report depends on the size of the stone.

...you can figure on about $100 per carat as the cost of a GIA report. The GIA has an established pricing schedule based on the carat weight of the diamond, but you won't be too far off if you use this rule of thumb.

For instance, a Dossier covering any diamond up to 0.99 carat costs $78.00, I think. A diamond in the 1ct range costs $118.00 (again, I think, working from memory). A 5ct diamond will costs something in the $500 range, though I don't know exactly the amount. A 10ct diamond will be in the $1,000 range.

This is just a rule of thumb that I myself developed, so please no one start quoting exact numbers and pointing out how inaccurate my rule of thumb is...it is close enough for most people, I think, to give them a ballpark figure.

I would assume that most consumers wanting to submit a stone themselves would have diamonds under 2 carats, so you can safely figure on either $78.00 or $118.00 as your cost, plus postage both ways and a $5.00 handling fee at the GIA.
