I just wanted to start a thread in the metals forum, it looked loney.

Which metal do you prefer white gold, or platinum?

I like the feel of platinum and the fact that it actually takes on a nice
worn look over time, but still maintains its beauty and durability.

So do I, and you dont have to keep rhodium plating.
Thanks for the vote. Its one of those questions I always got asked when I was in retail, and everyone always had a different opinon about which was better.

Both my wife and son prefer white gold; they like the slightly warmer colour and think it looks better than platinum.
Personally though, I prefer platinum. It is far more durable (by around 4 or 500%) and has the strange property of being somewhat self-healing. Deep scratches seem to heal to a certain extent, whereas they don't in white gold. I wear a platinum puzzle ring that I made over 30 years ago. It is made of 1mm wire and, despite being worn continually and me doing rather a lot of "dirty hands" type work, it still has a good sheen and shows very little signs of wear. These properties, together with it having almost no springiness, make it ideal for holding stones. It can also take a deeper shine.
On the down side, volume for volume, its much more expensive, and its also noticably more difficult to work.
So, "yer pays yer money and yer takes yer choice".
