Diamond Design Allows Lowering Cost
(October 3, '06, 6:36 IDEX Online Staff Reporter)

Effy Hematian's “Effy Diamond”, looks like a solitaire diamond, but is in fact an unusual setting that creates a bigger appearance.

Though it appears to be a single cut diamond with an octagonal table and eight crown facets from the top, it is actually an octagonal diamond at the center and eight pie cut diamonds around it. The setting creates a unique design where several diamonds together create the illusion of one large solitaire.

According to Effy Hematian, each ‘Effy Diamond’ appears 2.3 times bigger, but is 25 percent less expensive than a solitaire of comparative size. They are available in I1 quality, +I color, at 40 points and bigger.

The Effy diamond seems a litte Iffy to me.
Sometimes bigger isn't always better.

I guess I'd have to see it in person.

This is not the first "composite" diamond to come into the market. There are many people selling other composite shapes although this example may be another decent looking innovation. If it suits your budget and desires, what else is required?

Some people want and can afford other alternatives, but there is far more business and profit at the commercial end of the jewelry business than at the top. If people are getting designs that suit their needs, the jewelry industry will prosper on those opportunities. We need to look at traditional as well as innovative approaches in this rapidly changing world.

Jewelers are in the "adornment" business. The designs, the gems, and the metals all may change, just as they have done over the centuries, but the desire for adornment is the constant.

25% less doesn't sound like enough.

It's about 75% less valuable than a similar single stone. Maybe less.
