Hi Everyone

So I picked up an ring at Spence Diamonds (I'm in Canada....Toronto to be exact).

It was a solitaire platinum ring...the diamond was a Good cut, I color, 86 points, and a SI2.

Total cost was $7200 Canadian

I wasn't sure it it was the best deal....so I looked around some more and after going to 4 different stores I felt good about the buy.

Then I decided to go to one last store....and changed my mind.

I got a solitaire platinum ring again (actually the ring was pretty much identical).....the diamond was an ideal cut, E color, and 91 points but the clarity was I1

Now I looked at the diamond with them and the only inclusion I could see was one crystal feather towards the edge of the diamond....to the naked eye you couldn't see it and the diamond looked much better to the naked eye IMO. So I improved on 3 of the C's but went down in 1....

According to the jeweler the feather would likely be covered by the mounting holding the diamond anyway....

I ended up getting this one for $7200 total (including taxes).

So did I make a good move? bad move? ok move?

How about a little more information?

1. Were they certified

2. what were the measurements of the diamonds.

1. I'm pretty sure.......but not 100% to be completely honest. The one at Spence was but the other jewler I'm not 100% sure...I think so...they had some sort of report on it from the dealer.

2. I don't have that info.... I didn't think that was that important to take down since everything I read focuses on the 4 C's. I actually haven't picked up the ring yet (I do a week from today).

Are wholesalers allowed to answer this kind of question? Can I answer?

Why wouldn't you be allowed??? Please do answer.... :D

I'm just looking for people's opinion on if I made the right choice......price it not the issue really....I think I'm in line with what I've seen at other stores.

Nick,

I would need to ask Greg the webmaster of this website permission to reply to your questions about diamonds.

Hi Aaron,

This is the place to get answers so feel free to post.

I think you may have misunderstood me, I just don't want people constantly tring to sell like they do on other networks, the purpose of this network is to inform.

Tasteful self promotion is cool. and answering peoples questions is tres-cool..

Greg,

Thanks but I wonder if wholesalers are allowed to talk to public for purpose of informing. I do not want to break your rules.

Hi,

I don't think giving helpful information is a bad thing. I would be careful about posting information about wholesale costs. This could piss off your customers :)

Hi,

It's hard to tell you if you did get a good value without having all the specs on the diamonds. It's like comparing 2 cars without opening the hood and looking at the engines..

Just a few of the things that will effect the "value are

Cut
Clarity
Color
Proportions

If you are spending that kind of money on a ring, I do not think it is out of line to expect to have the diamonds certified by a legitimate lab like GIA, PGS or EGL-USA

Greg,

You compare diamonds to car engines?? LOL Diamonds do not use high priced gasoline and do not cause pollution. LOL

Nick, Do you have copies of certificates from two stores for two diamonds? If so, you can scan them and post them on Greg's fine website for Greg or anyone to offer you professional opinion.

I actually don't - I'll be picking up the ring mid-next week and I should get it then.

I figured there was more than just the 4c's because when I look at some sites they'll have a diamond that is pretty much the same in respect to the 4c's but you can still see one costs hundreds more.

Maybe I can get it scanned mid-next week once I have it.

Nick,

Cool Good luck with the ring that you are picking up next week. If I have a nice girlfriend that I am going to marry, I would buy her AGS certified ideal cut diamond (round or princess) mounted on white gold or platinum ring. My ideal arrangement would be AGS certified ideal cut diamond (round or princess) center surrounded by two blue sapphire side stones on white or platinum ring. Gorgeous sight.

Good luck to you!!!

Sounds nice!

The ring is platinum...I'm a fan of solitaires so that's why I went with that. I'm sure it will be nice....I just keep questioning myself because I don't have it in front of me and I worry. The thing is that if I get it and I'm not really happy with it then I can return it.

I think I'll be keeping it.

I would find an Independant Appraiser in your area to look at the diamond. If you go into a store they will always knock a competitors merchandise and it is impossible for you to get an unbiased opinion.

If you tell me what town you are near I can see if I have the name and address of one for you.
