Topaz

For centuries, topaz was associated with the color yellow. People assumed that all yellow gems were topaz, and all topaz was yellow. Now it is know that topaz occurs in a broad range of colors that includes red, pink, purple, yellow, orange, brown, blue and green. Topaz can also be colorless.

Yellow topaz is the color used for one of the November birthstones.

Blue Topaz is used for one of the December Birthstones.

Rainbow topaz (also called mystic topaz or mystic fire) is topaz that has been color enhanced by coating it with a fine layer of metal atoms (in a process called vacuum deposition). This stone has red, green, violet, and blue streaks. Mystic fire has a hardness of 8.
