Moldavite

Moldavite is an amorphous natural glass, and a type of tektite. Tektites are irregularly shaped glassy blobs containing gas bubbles. Some scientists believe that tektites formed when meteorites struck the earth, altered the surface rock under extreme heat and pressure, and splashed it while in molten form. People who follow this theory say that moldavites found near Moldavia in the former Czechoslovakia come form material ejected from a crater about 186 miles away -in present day Germany- where a meteorite struck the earth 15 million years ago.
Other scientists believe that tektites originated in volcanic eruptions in the crater Tyco on the moon and fell to the earth about 14 million years ago.
Moldavite is a medium to dark yellowish to grayish green, depending on where it’s found. Hardness ranges from 5 to 6 on mohs scale and there are no commercial treatments for moldavite.
