Carat Weight

Diamonds are measured by carats. The metric carat is equal to approximately .200 grams (or 200 milligrams) and can be divided into smaller units called points. Points to a carat and like pennies to a dollar. Thus a half of a carat is the same as 50 points or .50ct. Diamonds of equal weight may appear slightly different in size, depending on the depth and proportions. Because larger stones are quite rare, larger diamonds of gem quality are much more valuable.
