Can anyone give me some information on Green Sapphires? I have a ring that has two trillion shaped green sapphires ..one on each side. The total weight of them is 1.08 and they are like VS stones.

Thanks :)

When a pet bites a person and it's caught on tape, it's aired as "When good pets go bad."

When plastic surgery doesn't end up like it's supposed to, it's aired as "When nose jobs go bad."

When you go to the islands to get married and a hurricane hits, it's called "When vacations go bad."

When they're treating sapphire, and it turns more green instead of blue, it should be aired "When sapphires go bad."

Hey Joe,

You should go back to gem class... green sapphires are naturally accuring found mostly in Australia, with some from Montana and Thailand. I happen to have a Thai one that exquiste.

True quote... "Due to its iron content, green sapphire is generally quite a strong, bright green color, sometimes with green to bluish green or yellowish green pleochroism." Curzio Cipriani/Alessandro Borelli

They do take light greens and burn them to other colors but good natural greens are extrodinary.

Love green sapphires (actually most all sapphires) and the price is quite low.

To answer your question more Pamie...

Green sapphires are fairly rare in nice color/clarity, but are not expensive. Market price in Thailand is about $20 pre carat for your 1/2 carat stones. US retail price is about 5 times that.

Sapphires occure naturally in just about ever color imaginable. I even have some color-change sapphires that are cool.

I thought green sapphires came from the planet Krypton. Used to be called Kryptonite.

Saffles, no where in my post did I say there is no natural green sapphire nor did I say it was all ugly. I have not put my spectroscope on these two specific stones nor have I looked at growth striae nor have I seen the nature of inclusions.

However, sapphire is USUALLY heated. And I'm not gonna start regurgitating other's quotes regarding what puts the green in corundum, but am I incorrect in saying when they're USUALLY heating sapphire, they're hoping hoping for more blue than green?

Considering pamie is a bargain hunter (and there's nothing wrong with that), who buys from "individuals," I'm going to assume the worst. I've been online now for 10 years, when it was a big deal to log on at 2500 baud and will refrain from getting in any pissing matches in my old age, Saffles.

I will tell you this. Green sapphire is priced in the same catagory as amythest in the southeastern United States. I derived that using MARKET DATA research, not cost data. Yeah some amethyst goes for $10/ct in your finer retail stores. Only problem is, you gotta be a finer retail store to get it. :)

Hey Joe,

I was not trying to insult ya or anything... or getting into pissing contests, I was sorta joking with you (going back to class and all). But in reading your comment, someone who does not know sapphires would think that ALL greens are mistakes. :D No problemo...

Yes, almost ALL corrundum is heated... I have been to the cookers and watched them. I was even around when the first beryllium Pad. sapphires popped out... funny story that one. It was all a big accident.

Yes, amethyst goes for about $2-4 per carat (for the Brazil stuff). I defy you to get a great green sapphire for that (I am assuming hers are nice since she likes them so much). But I think if you run over to West Town Mall to the Bailey, Banks, and Biddle store you will see amethyst jewelry selling for a hell of a lot of money!!! Loads more than $10 per carat (silver am. ring $350, costs about $35, at the most, to make). Oh, I am from East. Tenn. also.

Since it sounds like you have done a lot of MARKET DATA research maybe we can compare notes and see what prices are nowdays... I might get back into the gem biz.

Anyway, have a great ET summer...

Mark

LMAO Mark. Perhaps when I get spare time I'll be happy to compare notes but for now, it's nessessary for me to charge for my time. Redheaded wife, 6 yr old daughter, and a 2 yr old "teething and crabby" son gotta eat and I'm the hunter.

It's so easy to be misread online and I admit I misread your "go back to gem class". No problem. No biggie, and it certainly didn't "ruin my whole day". :)

I'm actually from Signal Mountain, just outside of Chattanooga. Came up to Knoxville for school and decided it's just far enough away from my disfunctional family, but not too far! Believe it or not, my redheaded wifeypoo is from Signal Mtn too, but we knew of each other, but didn't really know each other. Guess you can say I went off to find a hometown girl.

I'd love to visit Thailand!!!! Sounds like you've been around.

GGJoe you know their are many grades of Amethyst and some of it can not be bought for $10.00 a carat. I'm sure you have seen it.
Nowdays I just assume every colored stone I come accross has been treted in some manner. Even if just treated badly! That's a joke. :D
