Hi. My boyfriend, now fiancé, bought a .5 carat, SI1 ? I, wanna (not sure of correct spelling) cut, round diamond. I absolutely loved it at first sight. Very sparkly and full of rainbow colors nice and very clean to the eye, just a very pretty diamond. I have worn my ring now for 15 days and today I noticed that there is a very eye visible crack in my diamond. This is not the first problem that I had with the ring, I had to have an unsoldered part of the ring (not connected at all) fixed the 2nd day I had it. I am not an overly active person. I have been very conscious of my new ring, not to knock it around or hit it on surfaces. My question is, why would this happen to a diamond when I thought they were supposed to be very hard and durable? Secondly, do you have any suggestions on how to approach the retailer about our problem? Thank you very much.
Sincerely, Rae
Simply go to the retailer with your ring and state your concerns directly, calmly and without emotional embellishment. You'll get your answers.

The fact you bought it at a retail Jeweler should make it easy to remedy the situation.
I would hake it in and see what their explanation is for you issues and what they plan to do to remedy them.
Please keep is posted as to what happens.

Hi. Thank you very much for replying to my original questions regarding the crack in my diamond. I don?t believe that is was certified. No papers came with it. The crack (what I now know is a ?feather?) is inside the diamond (not a chip and not on the surface and does not break through to the surface). It radiates from the claw area to almost the middle of the diamond. My fiancé and I took it to the retailer we bought it from. I explained to him that I had a question about my diamond, that 3 days ago I noticed that light was reflecting very differently in it and I could visibly see that there was a crack in my diamond, like broken glass, that I had not seen before at all. He took a look under the microscope and definitely noticed what I mentioned. He told me not to worry that this is natural?which I completely understand (I was not expecting to have a flawless or near flawless diamond at all), and that I should wear my ring the other way because it is less noticeable that way. I flat out asked him if it could be a clarity enhanced diamond and he said no. I then asked him if the feather could have been less visible the first 14 days I had worn it and then gotten bigger, and will it get bigger over time. His answer was no. I am completely sure that the ?feather? was not eye visible the first 14 days. My fiancé then asked what our options were if we decided that we didn?t want the diamond. He said that we were free to ?upgrade? with him. I left feeling very bad about the situation. I know that I am going to get an appraisal on the diamond as it looks now and if it is far less than what my fiancé paid then I will get my fiancé?s money back and we can do something different?might not be as easy as I?m hoping. I am certainly not the ?finicky fiancée? and that is how I feel right now. It?s the fact that it has changed since I?ve worn it. It?s more important to me to know that my fiancé didn?t get taken for a ride!!! So now I have a whole new set of questions? Can a ?feather? get bigger??? Does an eye visible inclusion drop a diamond to an I grade automatically??? Basically how do you feel about the situation in general??? Thank you very much for taking the time to help!!!!

An internal feather in a diamond will not grow and any new damage will reach the surface, usually the girdle. It?s common for people to start to see things after they wear it for a while for two basic reasons. First, you?ve looked at it a lot and have become familiar with the details. Secondly, as the stone gets dirty it becomes easier to see internal characteristics that weren?t visible in the store lighting. Depending on the details, the upgrade offer may be the way to go. If the store will take a return on the diamond for the amount you paid and apply that against a better one that you want, this is worth considering. This, of course, assumes that the better one is reasonably priced and that you would otherwise prefer it.
If you are concerned that the stone may be fracture filled or may have been otherwise misrepresented by the jeweler you should seek out an independent appraisal to settle these worries.

I agree with Neil, get a second appraisal. I have not seen the stone but the size of the incusion you have described, although they can reflect differently in the stone making it appear larger than it is, I might question the SI1 grading. To be able to see it that easy in a .50ct diamond makes the grading suspect.

I had an independant appraisal done. I was very happy to find out that my set was actually worth quite a bit more than what my fiance paid for it. They said he got a good deal. The diamond graded as an SI2, and I was reassured that I don't need to worry about the feather in it. Plus when I wear it a certain way it really is undectable to me, and I certainly don't think anyone looking at my diamond, from the other way, would be rude enough to hold it up to their noses so that they could inspect it. I definitly don't want to "upgrade". I love my rings, they were given to me with lots of love and I will cherish them forever. I did find out some interesting facts though. The engagement ring has a stamp of a name brand retailer on the inside, even though we did not buy it from that particular retailer, and the wedding band which is yellow gold has this very perculiar half shank in white gold on the side of the ring reaching to the bottom middle. The appraiser told us it was probably sold to us used, unbenounced to us, but hey...as long as there's no bad energy attatched to it....that's fine with me :) The appraiser that I went to did not have very nice things to say about the place where my fiance bought my rings either...oh our little town...gossip spreads....haha. So anyways, that's the story of my diamond engagement ring and wedding band set. Thank you all very much for replying to my questions and taking the time to read about my worries :)

I'm happy to hear that you are comfortable with your ring. I'm uncomfortable with an appraiser making comments about a place of business. As a professional appraiser, I'm always careful to keep my opinions about a store to myself. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

I agree with Jeff. I think it's unprofessional when jewelers talk about other jewelers but much worse when an "objective"? unbiased appraiser discusses a
jewelry store badly.

I agree, however it happens all the time around my little town. Some of the Jewelers and GG's have a little click going. I try not to ask where items were purchased unless, they are just nasty with nice papers.
