Blue Diamonds?

Is there such a thing as blue diamonds? I've seen a picture of one on another site selling for about $399 (reduced price according to the site.) The color was a deep blue, almost like a blue sapphire. How can you tell the properties of this type of diamond? Do the same principles and guidelines apply?

There are blue diamonds. Some are natural and some are treated to give it the blue color.
Naturals are very expensive and the treated ones are much less. How big was the one you saw?

Hi Kelly,

Natural Blues can easily be mid/low to mid 6 figures for a 1 carat size (depending on the "modifier" colors, ie gray/blue or green/blue).

In case that didn't shake you ;) Natural Reds go for 1,000,000 plus.

Here's (http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/diamond-hope-smithsonian.gif) a pretty nice natural blue. I don't think it's for sale though.

I am sure the one you saw was irradiated. I have done diamonds by this process and know it quite well. Costs for processing are very low and blue is a very easy colored diamond to produce, as the source diamond is very plentiful.

Total costs are less than $200 a carat.

Well... no. I guess I should have been more exact. The price was for smaller stones, less than 1 carat. As with any diamond the price rises as the size goes up. Also, this was my cost as I was the one doing the irradiation in quantities of 1000 carats at a time.

I just pulled up my old spreedsheets and confirmed my memory... my costs, per carat (keep in mind this was 2 years ago)...
.45 - .99 $178
1.00- 1.99 $548
2.00 + $698 (on avg., larger stones were not as clean)

Now keep in mind the WHOLESALE price, per carat of blue irradiated diamonds: (also from 2 years ago, from LOTUS)
.49 - .99 $1000
1.00-1.99 $2200
2.00+ $2800

I do not mind sharing costs as I am no longer in the business.

Saffles you need to find another treater. I have Diamonds color enhanced all the time and I don't pay anywhere near the price you are quoting. Oh' I just read that you are no longer in the business. With those prices I can see why.

I did not say I paid that price for enhancements... I said that was the cost including diamonds. Enhancement is very cheap per carat.

And the price was Lotus' wholesale sales pricing.

I got out because my company was bought out by a large European fashion/design house and I signed a no-compete contract.

And on the other post...I know for a fact Chatham has bought hydrothermals. And no where did I sat that hydrothermals were 20 cents a carat. Hydro corrundom is more expensive than emerald.

Saffles I am not going to argue with you. It seems as though that's what you are looking for as you brought our post from another thread over here. And just FYI having Diamonds color treated is not exactly cheap.
